Sustainable Leadership Starts Here: Developing Managers in a B Corp Business

Why manager capability matters in a B Corp

At TBL, we know that leadership isn’t just about managing tasks, it’s about shaping culture, supporting people, and driving long-term, sustainable change. As a B Corp, our commitment to people isn’t just a tagline, it’s part of how we do business. That’s why I recently took part in the Acas Training for Developing Managers: a one-day, in-person course in Birmingham designed to equip people managers with the confidence, knowledge and mindset to lead in a way that’s fair, thoughtful, and effective.

Learning with Acas

Delivered by Acas, the UK’s trusted body for workplace advice and employment relations, the training offered more than just legal know-how, it challenged us to think more deeply about how we lead others. With an emphasis on real-life scenarios, group discussion, and case-based learning, it created a space for honest reflection and practical skill-building.

The course covered the foundations of good people management – setting clear expectations, communicating effectively, recognising early signs of difficulty, and supporting others while maintaining accountability. But what really stood out was this: sustainable leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about being present, consistent, and committed to learning.

A personal perspective: my takeaways

As someone responsible for HR and operations, I found the training both affirming and eye-opening. There were moments that confirmed we’re on the right track — and others that made me pause and consider where we can improve. One of the most powerful takeaways for me was how crucial early intervention and trust-based conversations are for preventing issues and supporting long-term performance.

These aren’t just good HR practices – they’re sustainability practices. When we build teams where people feel safe, seen and supported, we reduce burnout, improve retention, and create the kind of resilient culture that can withstand change and grow with purpose.

Looking ahead: shared learning across TBL

My colleague Adam (Head of Customer Operations) is about to attend the same Acas course. He’ll share his reflections to this blog once he’s completed the session, adding his perspective as someone who works closely with our Customer Operations Team. I’m looking forward to seeing how the training resonates with him and how we can continue to embed shared learning across TBL.

Why manager development supports sustainable business

Leadership capability is one of the biggest levers we have to shape the future of TBL. When our managers feel supported and skilled in leading people well, we create a ripple effect – one that strengthens performance, wellbeing, and trust across the organisation.

For us, this training supports our goals to:

  • Build confidence and clarity in line management
  • Align leadership behaviours with our values and B Corp commitments
  • Reduce the risk of issues escalating by addressing them early
  • Create space for continuous learning and open dialogue

This isn’t about box-ticking, it’s about embedding a culture of sustainable, human-centred leadership that grows with our business. Because if we want to build a future-fit organisation, we need leaders who know how to lead with purpose, not just process.
