It’s one thing to have a passion for sustainability. But for anyone about to enter the workspace, there’s real value in seeing what sustainability looks like for real businesses wanting to make a real difference. That’s what Izzy Champion got from her recent internship with us. Here, in her own words, is what she gained from the experience.
When I started my MSc in Environmental Management at Lancaster University, I made a conscious decision to use this academic year to gain as much practical experience as possible. As the year went on, my career ambitions became clearer, and I realised that I want to enter the field of environmental consultancy.
To start this journey, I began searching and applying to relevant internships, and it was through Lancaster University that I came across TBL. I was immediately drawn to TBL by their approach to sustainability. They communicate complex ideas with simplicity and excitement, making sustainability more accessible and achievable for businesses, no matter their starting point.
Prior to this internship, I had limited experience in combining the environmental science side of sustainability to the real-world drivers of meaningful change: people and businesses. That is exactly what TBL focuses on. They incorporate the full spectrum of sustainability: social, environmental and economic, into every aspect of their work, so I knew that gaining experience within a company that values this holistic approach would be ideal for me.
During my time at TBL as a Sustainability Intern, I contributed to the development of numerous templates designed to streamline the various services that TBL offers, including producing enhanced sustainability reports, double materiality assessments, client workshops and carbon accounting.
I also produced several kick off decks, data collection tables, draft emails, GRI/ESRS indices and an enhanced report outline. Through these tasks, I gained valuable insight into the behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing enhanced sustainability reports and learned more about the comprehensive services that TBL offers to its clients.
Gaining this practical experience with TBL has been invaluable, not only did it further my understanding of sustainability in business, but it has also pushed me one step closer to reaching my career goals. I am incredibly grateful to all the TBL Team, particularly Adam who supervised and guided me throughout this process. I am excited to continue working towards a sustainable future.
